How Many Solar Panels Do You Need to Charge Your EV?

Electric cars are becoming more and more popular at an unimaginable speed, making almost all manufacturers now offer an EV model to their fans. In 2021, electric vehicles will be almost twice as prevalent among electric car lovers. These cars are an irreplaceable option for saving fuel and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. With solar panels in your home, you can charge your electric car very quickly, and you no longer need to buy vehicles equipped with solar panels, although this can be very attractive. To charge your electric car, you need a converter station to transfer energy from your home’s solar power system to the vehicle. Solar inverters are the central part of this transition. It involves converting direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC). Electric cars are also not immune and must be placed in this circuit to be charged. With the new SolarEdge EV charging inverter technology, you will have a charger and an inverter in one device at the same time. First, we need to know the car battery’s capacity. The battery capacity of an EV is measured in  (kWh) and can range from 20s to 100 kWh or more. For example, the supercharged Tesla Model S has a 100 kWh battery, while the BMW i3 only has a battery with 33 kWh capacity. As mentioned above, your car’s battery capacity determines the specific number of panels you need. We prefer to evaluate the standard Tesla Model S with a 75 kWh battery. The quality and efficiency of panels adjust the amount of energy-producing, and now we can calculate the number of panels we need. Generally, a 250-watt solar panel will produce around 30-42.5 kWh of AC power per month, for a reliable answer should consider the minimums. If a reasonable price solar panel produces approximately 1 kWh of AC electricity per day, in this case, you need 75 panels to charge your Tesla car batteries fully. Fortunately, an average trip is 37 miles per day, but this is not the reality because if your panels have acceptable quality, the number of panels will fall to 12 panels.   Since your solar panel systems have around 25 to 30 panels, this is not out of mind that you quickly could charge your vehicle.
